I got this book as a recommendation from Reddit, but I don't think I fully understood the target audience. The book is a great introduction to the emotional hills and conflicts that many pre-dads may encounter, and it addresses them under the premise that the father-to-be's experience during pregnancy and childbirth is rarely discussed, and often ignored. As such, I think it's a great book if you're about to be a father and you have concerns about the adjustment - whether this many include your own emotional development, the relationship between you and your partner (usually the child's mother), or how to prepare for the trials and tribulations of becoming a father. That wasn't really the kind of book I was looking for, so it didn't appeal to me very much. Much of the rest of the book explains what to expect in the mother's and the child's development - but it does so at a very introductory level, targeted towards people with very little exposure to pregnancy or healthcare (since I work in healthcare, this didn't really apply to me and I found much of the material to be too introductory and slow-moving.In summary, if you're about to be a father and feel like you have no idea what to do or what to expect, this is a good book for you. If you're about to be a father and you're just in the mood for some specific tips or pointers, this book might be a little too broad for you.
My husband LOVES this book! He's reading it month by month as we progress through our pregnancy and he loves sharing the knowledge he's learning. It's got recipes he can cook for me and helps him better understand what I'm going through (like, perfectly!). Excellent resource for new dads!
Really good book for first time fathers like myself. Goes month to month on what to expect and describes how you, baby, and your partner may be feeling. Iam not a huge reader but this kept me entertained and interested at times I couldn't put the book down. There are some chapters that were less interesting but I think that all depends on the individual. Overall great book!
I bought this as the way to surprise my husband that I was pregnant. I almost bought one of the more gag gift "dude bro" type books, but I'm so glad I didn't! My husband, who is not a book reader, is actually reading this thing and taking it seriously. So it's a good thing I bought a book with actual useful information in it.As for contents, it talks about what the expecting mother is going through, how he should help, and how to deal with things he might going through.
This is a book (and series) that blends helpful information and humor and presents it from the father's perspective. I have found it both readable and useful providing details about not only how my child is developing but what my wife might be experiencing and tips for supporting our relationship while we raise our child. He also takes time to acknowledge the unique feelings and thoughts of men as parents. Very refreshing and helpful.
I went into our pregnancy not really knowing much beyond what I'd learned in sex ed growing up. I've never spent much time around pregnant people. When my wife and I learned we were expecting, I got this book so I could do my part to prepare. But I didn't really know whether it would be enough. Now that our beautiful baby has arrived, I can reflect on how well this book prepared me. For me and our situation, I can say that this book had everything I really needed to know. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to any expecting father. Read it all the way through ASAP, just to get the big picture, end-to-end. Then revisit each monthly chapter as the months approach. After that, invest your time in learning about actually being a dad!As a bonus, what I really appreciated about this book was how up-to-date it is, its inclusiveness of diverse situations (e.g. IVF and active duty expectant fathers), and its progressiveness.
Bought this for my husband. We both HATED the patriarchal, didactic tone. I’d have returned it, but it wasn’t worth the effort. We won’t be recommending or sharing this with newly-pregnant friends.
Having heard so much about this book on the usual blogs/reddit/etc, I was somewhat underwhelmed when I went through it. It has some useful information in it, but it has a tendency to almost condescendingly depict us dads-to-be as "lovable but bumbling morons" who can't figure out even the most basic tasks on our own. All in all not a bad read, but there are better options out there for anyone pressed for time.
